Chat history
Chat history is the list of past conversations an AI assistant saves to your account. It's handy for picking up where you left off, but it's also a growing archive of everything you've ever typed, worth reviewing and cleaning now and then.
Every conversation you have with ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini lands in a sidebar list: your chat history. It’s genuinely useful: you can reopen last month’s draft instead of starting over. But it’s also a diary you didn’t realize you were keeping.
Think of a plumber who has used a chatbot for a year of quotes. His history now holds hundreds of customer names, addresses and prices, all behind one password. If someone gets into that account, they get the archive too, one good reason to add two-factor authentication.
Three things you can do, all free: delete individual chats you no longer need, use a temporary chat for one-off sensitive questions, and check whether your history feeds training data. Our setup wizard covers all three in a few minutes.
Where you’ll meet this
- ChatGPT → the sidebar list; Settings → Data Controls to archive or delete all
- Claude → the conversation list; deletion per chat or in bulk from settings
- Gemini → Gemini Apps Activity, including auto-delete options
