Deep research mode

Deep research mode is an AI feature that spends several minutes searching dozens of sources, cross-checking them, and writing a cited report instead of answering instantly. Available in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity.

A normal chat answer is a quick phone consult. Deep research is commissioning a small dossier: the AI plans the question, runs dozens of web searches, reads what it finds, follows up on gaps, and returns a structured, multi-page report with linked sources, typically after five to thirty minutes of work.

Where it earns its keep: “compare the e-bike rules in the countries we’re touring this summer,” “what do reviews really say about these three espresso machines,” “map my competitors’ delivery offerings.” Anything you’d otherwise spend an evening of tab-juggling on.

Two honest caveats. The reports look authoritative, formatting included, but quality depends on what the web offered; click the citations on anything you’ll act on, because a wrong source produces a confident wrong paragraph. And runs are expensive to operate, so all platforms ration them, especially on free tiers.

Where you’ll meet this

A “Deep Research” button or tool selector in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, and Claude’s Research feature. Monthly run quotas differ sharply between plans. If research mode is a big part of why you’d pay, our plan picker factors that in.
