Voice mode
Voice mode lets you talk to an AI assistant out loud and hear it answer, like a phone call. Available in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot apps. Handy while cooking, driving, or whenever typing is the slow option.
Voice mode turns the chat into a conversation: tap the icon, speak normally, get spoken answers. Modern versions are genuinely conversational. You can interrupt mid-sentence, and they pick up tone, not just words.
It shines wherever your hands or eyes are busy. The plumber dictating a job summary while driving between clients. Practicing English answers out loud before a job interview, with the AI playing interviewer. Asking “what can I substitute for butter here?” with both hands in the dough. For many people who hate typing, voice mode is the moment AI finally clicks.
Worth knowing: your speech is processed in the cloud like typed messages, and depending on your settings voice conversations may be saved or used for training. The same privacy switches apply, so flip them once and they cover voice too.
Where you’ll meet this
The headphone/waveform icon in the ChatGPT mobile and desktop apps, Gemini Live on Android and iOS, and Copilot’s voice button. Quality and limits differ between free and paid tiers. If you’ve never set these apps up properly, our setup wizard gets you there in minutes, privacy switches included.
