How each one counts your usage

The core difference is the unit. OpenAI’s help pages describe ChatGPT Plus in terms of messages per window: you get a generous number of standard messages that reset every few hours, and when you exceed them you’re switched to a smaller model until the window resets. The most capable reasoning models also carry a separate weekly allowance when you select them manually.

Claude works differently. Anthropic’s help centre frames Claude Pro as a usage budget over a rolling five-hour window, and tells you plainly that the length and complexity of your chats, the model you pick, and the “effort level” all affect how fast you use it up. So two people on the same plan can hit the limit at very different points: a heavy researcher far sooner than someone asking quick questions.

That’s why “who gives more messages” has no honest single answer: one counts messages, the other counts work.

Notice the two different “limits” in play. ChatGPT’s headline limit is about how many messages; Claude’s headline strength is how long one conversation can run before older text drops off. Heavy document users feel the context window first.

Which one fits your work

Pick by how you actually use AI, not by the spec sheet.

• Long sessions over big documents (contracts, codebases, research dumps): Claude Pro’s larger context window and budget-style limits usually stay out of your way longer.
• Many short, varied tasks across a day, plus image and voice features: ChatGPT Plus’s per-window message caps are predictable and the feature set is wider.
• Occasional use: neither paid plan is worth it. Both free tiers handle light use, and these are monthly plans you can cancel anytime.
