Free tier
The free tier is the no-cost version of an AI service. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot all have one. You get real capability with limits on messages, models, and features; for many people it's genuinely enough.
Here’s something the upgrade banners won’t tell you: today’s free tiers are remarkably good. A retiree planning trips, a student summarizing notes, a shop owner drafting the occasional email: plenty of real lives fit comfortably inside the free version.
What “free” actually limits: message counts that reset after some hours, slower or smaller models once you hit the cap, rationed access to premium features like deep research or image generation, and queues at busy times. What it doesn’t limit is the core ability to ask and get good answers.
Two honest flip sides. The limits are designed to pinch exactly when you’re mid-task, which is the business model, not an accident. And on free tiers your conversations are more likely to be used for training by default, so check the opt-out switch on day one.
